Vida y Música de Celia Cruz Brillaron
En el Teatro La Perla, de Ponce

Ponce, Puerto Rico. - Después de haber recorrido exitosamente los escenarios de América y Europa, finalmente la obra musical de Celia Cruz (La Reina de la Salsa) y la "Guarachera del Mundo" tocó suelo puertorriqueño cobrando vida, colorido y sabor en el histórico y escenario del teatro "La Perla" de la Ciudad Señorial de Ponce.

En calidad de periodista especializada en espectáculos y cuando residía en la Ciudad de Nueva York, tuve la oportunidad de conocer personalmente a Celia Cruz para el año 1987 en una conferencia de prensa que tomó lugar en "El Palladium".

Y quienes la conocieron de cerca, como yo, podemos reafirmar indudablemente que nuestra universal cubana, amén de haber alcanzado el estrellato del firmamento artístico musical, también fue un ser humano noble. Simpática, amigable y amorosa con toda su gente, quienes la aplaudieron incansablemente por todo el dinamismo, energía positiva, calidad interpretativa y sabor único que impartía a todas sus presentaciones escénicas hasta el momento final de su viaje cósmico para situarse coronada, digna y orgullosamente en su más que merecido trono de gloria, donde reside eternamente viva entre todos nosotros.

Hoy día, sólo me resta rendir mi más caluroso y emotivo homenaje a Celia Cruz a través de mi palabra escrita resumiendo fielmente lo que es el espectáculo artístico más lucido y exitoso de estos tiempos .

Bajo la dirección musical de Isidro Infante al piano, y en los coros, la obra, en dos actos, dio comienzo con una proyección de fondo a todo color mostrando fotografías históricas de Celia mientras la orquesta (personificando a la extraordinaria Sonora Matancera) interpretaba una pieza musical con sus integrantes: Pedro Pérez, (Bajo); Nelson González (Tres, Percusión y Coros); Humberto León Ibarra (Congas, Percusión y Coros); Elías López, Jr. (Timbal y Percusión); David "Piro" Rodríguez (Trompeta); y Nelson Jaime (Trompeta y Teclado).

El elenco actoral estuvo compuesto por: Celia Cruz (Anissa Gathers); Pedro Knight (Pedro Telémaco); Celia Cruz, La Mujer (Dolores Pedro); Michael Stuart (Enfermero); Carmen Nydia Velázquez (Ollita); Amneris Morales (Tía Ana / Prensa #2); Julio Axel Landrón (Ralph Mercado/Simón/Club Manager); Carlos Marín (Rogelio Martínez / Prensa #1); Livan Domínguez (Militar); y Seidy Carrerra (Estilista). Integraon dinámicamente el Cuerpo de Baile y los Coros: Seidy Segarra, Leo Chávez, Tatiana Delgado, Livan Domínguez, Jonathan Maderas, Héctor Iván Silva y Gisela Rivera.

La "Vida y Música de Celia Cruz" comprende toda una sinopsis bibliográfica actuada y expresada con intenso dramatismo real por el célebre actor puertorriqueño Pedro Telémaco quien, a mi juicio crítico, demostró una vez más sus grandes, depuradas y brillantes aptitudes histriónicas personificando a "Pedro Knight" (amantísimo esposo de Celia), que en su mayoría compartió escénicamente hablando, datos históricos de relevada importancia artística en la vida de su famosa compañera con el cantante y actor Michael Stuart (personificando al enfermero), y que a su vez dejó demostrado que en adición a su gran talento musical, es también todo un actor en florecimiento continuo.

Lo más impresionante en mi carácter crítico, fue disfrutar las bien acertadas transiciones visuales del actor Pedro Telémaco cada vez que bajo un control y dominio total del personaje encarnado, dejaba de ser el Pedro Knight joven y lleno de vida y esperanzas para convertirse en el Pedro Knight anciano, nostálgico y sentimental rememorando pasajes excitantes de la vida de su amada Celia, toda vez que ésta abandonó físicamente el Planeta Tierra tras haber sufrido un cáncer de mama y un tumor cerebral maligno, para abonarse a los seres de luz del espacio cósmico.

Mediante su magistral actuación dramática narrada, las escenas eran interpretadas por sus respectivos actores en el lateral opuesto del escenario. Indudablemente Pedro Telémaco es un actor consumado tanto en la pantalla cinematográfica como en el tablado escénico.

Dolores Pedro, actriz cubana radicada en Puerto Rico, encarnó con gran acierto ciertos pasajes históricos de "Celia Cruz, La Mujer". Su escena más emotiva dentro de la obra, fue demostrar de forma convincente su inevitable deterioro físico ante la enfermedad. Pero cuando Anissa Gathers abordó el escenario encarnando a Celia, en mí se detuvo el mundo desde ese preciso instante.

Y por fuerza mayor tuve que aceptarme a mí misma que... ¡Celia vive reencarnada en el alma, el espíritu, las emociones, el genio de sus magia interpretativa, los movimientos corpóreos y el cósmico talento y sentimiento artístico de esta joven mujer artista que me dejó realmente boquiabierta durante el transcurso de toda la obra musical.

El orden de las canciones interpretadas durante el primer acto fue el siguiente: "Toro Mata (Celia y Compañía), "Drume Negrita/Canto Lucumi" (Ollita); "Cumbanchero" (La Mujer y Celia); "Caramelos" (Celia); Medley: "Burundanga", "El Yerbero Moderno" y "Qué Bueno Baila Usted" (Celia); "México Lindo" (Celia y Compañía). Segundo Acto" Medley: "Isadora Duncan", "Encantigo" y "Guantanamera" (Celia); "Usted Abusó" (Celia y Pedro); "Las Caras Lindas" (Ollita); "Quimbara" (Celia); "Cúcala" (Celia y el Enfermero); "Canto a la Habana" y "Dos Jueyes" (Celia); Medley: "Soy Antillana" y "La Dicha Mía" (Celia); "Oye Como va" (Celia y Compañía); "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" (Celia y el Enfermero); "Yo Viviré" (Celia); "Si Volvemos a Nacer" (Enfermero); "La Vida es un Carnaval" (Celia y Compañía) y "El Guabá" (Celia).

Las dos escenas finales de la "Vida y Música de Celia Cruz" fueron profundamente emotivas, especialmente cuando el actor Pedro Telémaco (Pedro Knight) observó en lo alto del firmamento una lumínica estrella que simbólicamente era su amada CELIA, a la que sonriendo ligeramente abrió sus brazos en señal de pronto reencuentro en el mundo espiritual.

La obra concluye felizmente cerrando el telón cuando Ollita y Celia vestidas de blanco como seres de luz, reciben a Pedro Knight en el Reino de los Cielos, quien a su vez, también viste un blanco traje de levita larga. ¡Todo, desde comienzo a fin me pareció soberbio y sensacional!

En resumen, extiendo mis más cálidas felicitaciones a uno y cada uno de todos los grandes actores y músicos participantes, ya que brillaron con luz propia en el gigante escenario del "Teatro La Perla" de Ponce.

Por consiguiente, extendemos una nota de sincero agradecimiento a los señores Raymond Gerena y Osvaldo Ruiz, productores de este fenomenal evento artístico que es una presentación de Gran Escenario (CEG Events) y que debe ser visto y disfrutado a plenitud suprema por todo el Universo.

After having successfully traveled the stages of America and Europe, the musical play about Celia Cruz (The Queen of the Salsa) finally arrived at the Enchanted Island of Puerto Rico with a fantastic stage presentation at the historical and prestigious "Teatro La Perla" in the majestic City of Ponce the night of August, 22, 2009, with more than one thousand people in the audience who enjoyed the most phenomenal artistic show of the present decade.

As a show business journalist while I resided in the City of New York, I had the wonderful opportunity in 1987 to personally meet Celia Cruz at a Press Conference which took place at "The Palladium." Those of us who met her personally and up close can attest, without any doubt, that our universal Cuban artist, besides having reached the highest artistic firmament, was also a noble human being. Friendly, warm and loving to all her who admired her for her unceasing positive energy, interpretative quality and the exceptional flavor which she gave to all her stage performances up to the final moment of her cosmic journey to be crowned with much pride and dignity in her well-earned throne of glory where she will be alive in all of us for all time.

Today, all that is left for me to express is my warmest and most emotional tribute to Celia Cruz through my written work in faithfully summarizing what is the most brilliant and successful artistic spectacle of these times.

Under the musical direction of Isidro Infante at the piano, and in the chorus, the work, in two acts, began with a projected display in full color of historic photographs of Celia while the orchestra (imitating the extraordinary Sonora Matancera) interpreted a musical piece by its members: Pedro Pérez, (Bass); Nelson González (Tres, Percussion y Chorus); Humberto León Ibarra (Congas, Percussion y Chorus); Elías López, Jr. (Timbales y Percussion); David "Piro" Rodríguez (Trumpet); y Nelson Jaime (Trumpet and Keyboard).

The cast of actors was composed of: Celia Cruz (Anissa Gathers); Pedro Knight (Pedro Telémaco); Celia Cruz, The Woman (Dolores Pedro); Michael Stuart (Nurse); Carmen Nydia Velázquez (Ollita); Amneris Morales (Aunt Ana / Press #2); Julio Axel Landrón (Ralph Mercado/Simón/Club Manager); Carlos Marín (Rogelio Martínez / Press #1); Livan Domínguez (Soldier); y Seidy Carrerra (Stylist). Dynamically integrated were the dancers and chorus: Seidy Segarra, Leo Chávez, Tatiana Delgado, Livan Domínguez, Jonathan Maderas, Héctor Iván Silva y Gisela Rivera.

The "Life and Music of Celia Cruz" is a biographical synopsis expressed and intensely acted with great dramatic skill by the well known Puerto Rican actor, Pedro Telemaco, who in my own critical sense, once again demonstrated his brilliant ability by accurately embodying the role of "Pedro Knight" (lovely husband of Celia), who was in most of the scenes as the elder Pedro Knight with his wife, Celia, and with the singer and actor, Michael Stuart, who played the role of his personal nurse.

By the dramatic narration and regal acting, the acts were portrayed by its respective actors on opposite sides of the stage. Without question, Pedro Telémaco is a consummate actor on stage as well as in cinema.

Dolores Prado, a Cuban actress who resides in Puerto Rico, portrayed certain historical events in the life of Celia, the Woman, with great realism. Her most emotional scene was demonstrating Celia’s physical deterioration during the last few years of her life from breast and cerebral cancer.

But when Anissa Gathers arrived on stage playing the role of Celia Cruz (The Queen of Salsa), I repeated myself that "Celia lives reincarnated in the soul, spirit, emotions, the genuineness of her interpretative magic, corporeal movements, cosmic talent and the artistic feeling of this young woman artist who left me completely astonished during the whole course of the musical play." Every time that Anissa Gathers appeared on stage with her majestic voice, elegant clothes, colorful wigs and fine shoes, according to the personal and professional taste and life of Celia Cruz, she captivated my most intimate attention with her incredible ability to both physically and spiritually portray "The Queen of the Salsa".

The order of the songs during the first act were the following: "Toro Mata (Celia and Company), "Drume Negrita/Canto Lucumi" (Ollita); "Cumbanchero" (The Woman and Celia); "Caramelos" (Celia); Medley: "Burundanga", "El Yerbero Moderno" and "Qué Bueno Baila Usted" (Celia); "México Lindo" (Celia and Company). Second Act: Medley: "Isadora Duncan", "Encantigo" and "Guantanamera" (Celia); "Usted Abusó" (Celia and Pedro); "Las Caras Lindas" (Ollita); "Quimbara" (Celia); "Cúcala" (Celia and the Nurse); "Canto a la Habana" and "Dos Jueyes" (Celia); Medley: "Soy Antillana" and "La Dicha Mía" (Celia); "Oye Como Va" (Celia and Company); "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" (Celia and the Nurse); "Yo Viviré" (Celia); "Si Volvemos a Nacer" (Nurse); "La Vida es un Carnaval" (Celia and Company) and "El Guabá" (Celia).

The final two scenes of the "Live and Music of Celia Cruz" were full of intense and diverse emotions, especially when actor Pedro Telemaco (Pedro Knight) observed a brilliant star in the sky that, symbolically speaking, was his beloved Celia and which caused him to smile and open his arms signaling a not too distant reunion in the spiritual world. The play closes with "Ollita and Celia" dressed in white, like spiritual beings, welcome Pedro Knight to the Glory of God.

To summarize, I extend my warmest congratulations to each and every one of the actors and participating musicians who shone their own special light on the gigantic stage of the "Teatro La Perla" in Ponce. I also extend a note of sincere gratitude to Mr. Raymond Gerena and Oscaldo Ruiz, producers of this phenomenal artistic event, which is a presentation of "Gran Escenario” (CEG Events) and that should be seen and enjoyed by the whole universe.
