RAFAEL HERNANDEZ
Rafael Hernández Marín nació en el pueblo de Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, y está considerado el más grande compositor de música popular. Estudió música en México y Puerto Rico. Sirvió en las Fuerzas Armadas de la Primera Guerra Mundial. En adelante, vivió en la ciudad de Nueva York y en La Habana, Cuba. Mientras vivió en Nueva York fundó el Trío Borinquen con el cual compuso su sentida pieza musical "Lamento Borincano" para el año 1929. Más tarde compuso "Preciosa" con el Cuarteto Victoria en 1937. Ambas piezas musicales son joyas musicales consideradas también como himnos nacionales de la patria puertorriqueña.
Diez años después para 1947 Rafael Hernández regresó a vivir a Borinquen Bella donde fue director de la Sinfónica Puertorriqueña y asesor musical de la WIPR Radio. Escribió innumerables y hermosas canciones entre las que mencionamos: Campanitas de Cristal, Ahora Seremos Felices, Capullito de Alelí, El Cumbanchero, Culpable, Ese Soy Yo, Perfume de Gardenias, Silencio, Tú no Comprendes, etc. Compuso además música navideña, zarzuelas, danzas, rumbas, congas, guarachas y boleros. Han sido incontables los grandes cantantes de música popular a nivel internacional que han interpretado majestuosamente las bellas composiciones de nuestro inmortal jibarito Rafael Hernández, que murió en 1965 dejando como legado un tesoro invaluable al campo musical del Universo.
PEDRO FLORES
El gran compositor Pedro Flores nació en Naguabo para el año 1894, siendo contemporáneo de Rafael Hernández. Su vasta obra musical consta de más de mil canciones; muchas de éstas aún inéditas. Le cantó apasionadamente al amor, a la patria y a la religión. Entre sus composiciones más populares figuran: Obsesión, Sin Bandera, Venganza, Perdón, Amor Perdido, Bajo un Palmar, Se Vende una Casita, Margie, Ciego de Amor, Despedida y Querube. Por todos los lugares del mundo que ha viajado, Pedro Flores tanto en Las Antillas, México, Estados Unidos como Hispanoamérica, ha dejado gran parte de su inspiración con su bien merecida fama de gran autor de bella música. Y tal como la música de Rafael Hernández, su música ha sido interpretada a nivel internacional por los más excelentes y reconocidos cantantes latinoamericanos. Falleció en San Juan de Puerto Rico para el año 1979.
SYLVIA REXACH
Sylvia Rexach está reconocida como la más popular compositora y poetisa musical de Puerto Rico en su época por el hermoso corte poético de trasfondo filosófico en la lírica de sus canciones. Nació en la ciudad de Santurce y sus bellas canciones siguen disfrutando de auténtica popularidad en toda Latinoamérica. Su primera composición fue "Idilio", un bolero grabado por la Orquesta de Muñoz. En adelante siguieron: Alma Adentro, Quisiera Ser, Anochecer, Una Vez, Olas y Arenas, Matiz de Amor, etc. Contrajo matrimonio con Bill Riley, soldado de Buchanan, divorciándose un tiempo después. Fruto de sus entrañas fueron sus amados hijos: Bill, Sharon y Sylvia.
Esta gran compositora nuestra organizó el conjunto musical "Las Damiselas" y fue manager de su propia orquesta femenina. Escribió además libretos para don Tommy Muñiz (Q.E.P.D.). Fue socio fundadora de la Sociedad Puertorriqueña de Autores, Compositores y Editores de Música. Murió víctima de cáncer el pasado 20 de octubre de 1961.

BIOGRAPHIES OF THREE GREAT PUERTO RICAN COMPOSERS

RAFAEL HERNANDEZ
Rafael Hernández Marín was born in the pueblo of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and is considered the greatest composer of popular music. He studied music in Mexico and Puerto Rico. He served in the armed forces during the First World War. Later, he lived in the city of New York and in Havana, Cuba. While living in New York he founded the Trío Borinquen with whom he composed his heartfelt musical piece “Lamento Borincano” in 1929. Later he composed “Preciosa (Precious)” with the Victoria Quartet in 1937. Both songs are musical gems and are also considered national hymns in the Puerto Rican homeland.
Ten years later in 1947, Rafael Hernández returned to reside in beautiful Borinquen where he was the director of the Puerto Rican Symphony and musical adviser to WIPR Radio. He wrote innumerable beautiful songs among which we mention: “Campanitas de Cristal, Ahora Seremos Felices, Capullito de Alelí, El Cumbanchero, Culpable, Ese Soy Yo, Perfume de Gardenias, Silencio, Tú no Comprendes,” etc. In addition, he composed Christmas music, zarzuelas, danzas, rumbas, congas, guarachas and boleros. There have been countless great singers of popular music at the international level who have majestically interpreted the beautiful songs of our immortal jibaro, Rafael Hernández, who died in 1965, leaving behind as a legacy an invaluable treasure in the universal music arena.

The great composer, Pedro Flores, was born in Naguabo in 1894, being a contemporary of Rafael Hernáandez. His vast musical works consists of more than a thousand songs, many of these as yet unpublished. He passionately sang of love, his homeland and religion. Among his most popular compositions are: Obsesión, Sin Bandera, Venganza, Perdón, Amor Perdido, Bajo un Palmar, Se Vende una Casita, Margie, Ciego de Amor, Despedida y Querube. Throughout all the places in the world where he traveled, Pedro Flores, whether in the Antilles, Mexico, United States and Latin America, left much of his mark with his well-earned reputation as a great creator of beautiful music. And, like the music of Rafael Hernández, his music has been interpreted on the international stage by the most excellent and recognized Latin American singers. He died in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1979.
SYLVIA REXACH
Sylvia Rexach is known as the most popular composer and musical poet in Puerto Rico during her time for her beautiful philosophical poetry in her song lyrics. She was born in the city of Santurce and her beautiful songs continue to enjoy popularity throughout Latin America. Her first composition was “Idilio,” a bolero recorded by the Muñoz Orchestra. There followed: Alma Adentro, Quisiera Ser, Anochecer, Una Vez, Olas y Arenas, Matiz de Amor, etc. She was married to Bill Riley, a soldier from Buchanan, but divorced a short time later. She gave birth to her loving children: Bill, Sharon and Sylvia.
This great composer of ours organized the musical group “Las Damiselas” and was manager of her own female orchestra. She also wrote scripts for don Tommy Muñiz (Q.E.P.D.). She was a founding member of the Puerto Rican society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers. She died a victim of cancer on October 20, 1961.
